During the January summer holidays UnitingCare West Community Options Central ran a school holiday program for young people living with disability aged between 12 - 19 years.
This program provided participants with a choice to participate in different activities, either in-house or community based, and in large or small groups.
Over the four weeks that the program operated the participants enjoyed a variety of different outings and activities as well as some new and exciting experiences.
Some of the fun activities included: bowling, trampolining at Flip Out, laser tag, movies, Perth Zoo, in house cooking and art days, mini golfing, rock climbing, Timezone, wildlife parks, roller-skating, SciTech and AQWA.
The end of the program was celebrated with the ever popular end of holiday’s disco where the participants showed off their rapping and dance skills to one another.
It is great to see the friendships which formed and the lovely comments from the families as to how the program has positively impacted their child and family life; sparking conversation from new experiences and providing some respite for family members.
The participants said that this was the best school holiday program ever and they particularly liked the rock climbing, roller-skating and laser tag.
To record the excitement of the past four weeks, participants created their own group masterpieces with crayons on canvas as a reminder.
